Rooftop solar potential

Available solar power on every roof in the region, solved hour by hour for a whole year — not from a pre-baked annual figure. Roofs and heights come from open data, shadows are ray-marched over a local surface model, irradiance from the ERA5 reanalysis.

ASP = A · (1 − SF) · GHI
A = roof area · SF = shadow fraction at that instant · GHI = global horizontal irradiance. Integrated over all 8760 hours.

Buildings just outside the area are still loaded as shadow casters — they are not analysed, only allowed to shade. Up to 2000 roofs can be analysed; if the region holds more, the largest are taken and the run says so.

3 · Irradiance year

A single past year carries that year's real weather. The climatology averages several, which is the fairer basis for sizing.

4 · Shadow model quality

Every roof keeps a minimum number of sample cells however many roofs there are, so the run gets slower with more buildings rather than less accurate. A few hundred roofs at Balanced takes a minute or two; use Coarse above that.

Ignore the sun below — 3°

Near the horizon shadows run for kilometres while irradiance is almost nil. Raising this speeds the run and changes the annual total very little.
